Altstadt Marstrand

Marstrand, a small but charming island – and car-free. We discovered Marstrand by chance while looking for a campsite – a super-beautiful place with a special flair. The island with its old town is only accessible by ferry… it has a certain charm. The origins of Marstrand date back to around 1275 – founded by the Norwegian King Håkon. In the Middle Ages, herring fishing made the town prosperous, and Marstrand developed into a thriving metropolis on the west coast of Norway. In 1658, Marstrand became part of Sweden and became a well-visited seaside resort… a charm that has endured to this day. In 1689, the mighty Carlsten Fortress was built, which towers over and dominates the townscape. Today, Marstrand is a popular tourist destination – a place without rushing or hurrying. A 5 km hiking trail leads around the island… We really liked it here… a place where you can still feel the history very well through the many old wooden houses…
