Batteriparken! Ett namn så elektriskt laddat att det kunde väckt liv i en devontida placoderm – men här, i Uppsala år 2025, är det inte elektriciteten som vibrerar i luften, utan doften av krita, svettiga barndomsdrömmar och förlorade …
The battery park! A name so electrically charged that it could have brought a Devonian placoderm to life – but here, in Uppsala in 2025, it is not electricity that vibrates in the air, but the scent of chalk, sweaty childhood dreams and lost eras!
There it stands – the climbing dinosaur! A plastic prehistoric beast, perhaps not anatomically correct (those claws – evolution would have objected), but still! It rises towards the sky like a forgotten dream from the heart of the Morrison Formation. I hear the echo of Allosaurus' roar in the children's shrieks. "Climb then!" shouts an adult. The child, in his purest paleontological ecstasy, crawls up towards the horizon like a newly hatched theropod in the morning mist.
The sandbox! Oh, this little box of geological desire! They call it “paleontological” – and sure enough, there they dig, with plastic shovels and grins. But in my mind I see little Schliemanns in kolt, brushing out plastic fossils with the same reverence one would unearth a trilobite in the Burgess Shale. "Here's a tooth!" shouts one child. Another: "I found a skeleton!" – true, in PVC and without scientific provenance, but oh, what a hunger for the past! If Cuvier had been here, he would have cried with happiness.
The carousel spins, like the Earth's disk through the eons – from the Ediacaran to the Eocene. The seesaw swings back and forth, a mental image of the species' evolutionary hesitation: should we go on land? Should we return to the sea? A pteranodon parent looks at his mobile phone. The child swings on, like ammonites in a tidal wave.
The swings, yes – they carry the children like time travelers between the Quaternary ice ages. Back and forth! Back and forth! Not just in space, but in time, in the longing of ancient memory.
And then this: many tables. Many! Here the expedition headquarters are set up, here maps (in the form of juice and biscuits) are spread out, here finds are analyzed (an ice cream stick! A bottle cap! Proof of the Anthropocene!). Under the table a pigeon sneaks – perhaps the modern dinosaur itself, an heir to Deinonychus, albeit with a sadder look.
The location? Sublime! The Academic Hospital, ready to receive a trilobite in shock. The university nearby, perhaps with a professor emeritus of paleobotany who secretly plays here every Sunday.
The battery park is more than just a playground – it is a gateway! A stratigraphic crack in Uppsala where ages meet, where children become paleontologists, where sand becomes sediment, where plastic becomes imagination. It may be built of modern materials – but it moves with the soul of antiquity. The final grade is 4/5 trilobites – minus one because the climbing dinosaur has no feathers.
