I would like to make a complaint about a very rude and racist comment from the dental hygienist during my last visit. When I asked if I was doing something wrong or if there was anything I could do to make my gums feel better, she first replied: “Yes, that’s how it is when you come from India.” I was shocked by the comment. She then asked where I came from, and when I replied that I am from the Middle East, she said: “Exactly, if you come from Africa, it is common to have more melanin, so you are not doing anything wrong.” I do not understand why she needed to comment on my origin at all, and it felt very inappropriate and prejudiced. She then went on to say: “You drink a lot of tea, don’t you?” and when I replied yes, she said: “Exactly, people like you drink a lot of tea.” This was also perceived as a stereotypical and prejudiced comment. Overall, I experienced the treatment as both passive aggressive and racist, which made me very uncomfortable.
