Slottsholmen Hotell & Restaurang is definitely an exciting and different hotel, with a superb location on Slotsholmen in Västervik. Parts of the hotel are built on the water, which makes the location of some of their rooms completely unique. The location of the hotel is fantastic in every way. And the fact that the hotel is even owned by Björn Ulvaeus from the legendary ABBA just gives the hotel a little extra. We stayed in one of their beautiful two-room suites. The suites are located in the main building, while the smaller rooms are located in the building that is built on the water. We were a little surprised, however, that above the suites were regular apartments, and not part of the hotel. The suite was large and very spacious, with a lovely view of the water. The room really felt like a home away from home, with everything from a record player with old hits to a good large kitchen. Will definitely stay here again, and definitely for longer periods. There were a few small things about the room that you could have wished were better. One was that there was quite a bit of noise from the exhaust fan in the bedroom and you couldn't turn it off. But it wasn't so much that you couldn't sleep. The hotel also had a small but quite nice fitness room, with an okay selection of machines. I could definitely dream of something to train my legs with. Otherwise, you could easily train your upper body. We ate in the restaurant once. It was a bit strange that the restaurant wasn't called anything specific, but was just part of the hotel. The food was really good, though, and I can definitely recommend eating there. We didn't go to the bar, but it looked nice. The breakfast was as expected of a hotel like this. I missed a little better coffee, but otherwise everything was as it should be. All in all, Slottsholmen Hotell & Restaurang is definitely a hotel I will return to. The hotel has also gone straight to my list of the best hotels in Sweden. Give the place a visit, it's worth it.
This review is a reflection on the restaurant, not the hotel (which is excellent). To make a long story short, the restaurant service was terrible, our waiter in particular. After arriving at the restaurant we waited approx 10 mins to be seated. Once seated (at a lovely window side table) we were totally neglected by our designated waiter. After approx 15 mins we were able to put in an order for our drinks AND dinner. Drinks showed up approx 25 mins later, but no meal. After patiently waiting for our meal (approx one hour) I finally got up and inquired with our waiter as to what was going on. He replied with a blank stare. A more seasoned staff then jumped in to investigate. Turns out our order was never submitted. We elected to leave at that point. The server then said, “no problem we’ll just charge you for your drinks and appetizer”. So $50 and 1 1/2 hours later we walked out having had 1 beer, 1 glass off mediocre wine and an order of cold garlic toast. Not exactly a primo experience. Suggest you dine elsewhere.
This is a review/warning to others about the restaurant. We visited on Aug 31/25. They claim they“forgot” about us. Service was painfully slow- first to be seated, then to place our orders. We watched for almost two hours as others around us were served their meals. When we ultimately inquired, they admitted that our order had been lost. One waiter blamed the other, and then talked about how short-staffed they were. We were presented with our bill- 337 kr (almost 50 Canadian dollars) for what we had consumed (a glass of wine, a beer and lukewarm/congealed cheese-garlic bread) We were quite honestly appalled at the abysmal level of customer service. In North America, a manager would have apologized (none presented themselves here, though we asked). It would also be quite common to have been “comp’d” the drinks or bread. Nope- full price for it all, and a parting “it wasn’t my fault” from the waiter. Avoid at all costs.
