TJURKÖ STONEQUARE The large quarry Special large quarries were opened because the company wanted to rationalize the work. In the large quarries, the tasks were more specialized than in the smaller quarries. Special teams of drillers and blasters extracted blocks that were delivered to the stonecutter. Since the stonecutter could now concentrate on cutting and blasting, his production increased. The stonecutters called the large quarry next door Vrålebo. Here, they worked their way down through many layers of stone on a large scale. With larger cranes, the lifting went more smoothly. The workers constantly moved away the broken stone, which made the quarrying much easier. The stone blanks were transported on sheet metal wagons on rails to the stonecutters outside the quarry. Long regular cracks are visible in the walls of the quarry in the horizontal direction of the rock. By drilling several vertical holes in a row, it was possible to blast loose blocks of stone between the cracks. As the work progressed downwards in the quarry, "steps" called pallets were formed. Greystone and granite crack more easily in certain directions, known as "cleaves". When the stone cracks in the direction of cleavage, the surfaces become flat and fairly even. A skilled stonemason can determine how to cut by looking and feeling the stone.
